Working with Domestic and Exotic Hard Woods

March 29, 2021

We work with 8 species of woods regularly and have access to more exotics woods like Zebra wood and Lace Wood when clients request them. At any given time, our shop has 10,000 board feet or more in stock which means clients aren’t waiting as long for their pieces because the wood is most likely already in stock.

The 8 woods we work in most often are Maple, Tiger Maple, Cherry, Mahogany, Oak, Walnut, Ash, and Alder. Often times, client’s aren’t certain what type of wood is best for their project but we are happy to help coach them through the different species and find what works best for their design needs and budget.

For instance, people often request furniture made in Walnut without realizing the recent spike in the cost of Walnut. If that client wants something with warm brown tones, we can make samples in Cherry or Maple in warm brown tones to get the look they want without the cost of using actual Walnut. If a client wants the actual look of a Walnut grain, there is no substitute for that species. Walnut has a distinct open grain look that can’t be replicated.

If you aren’t sure what wood you should be using for your project, we can make color samples in other species of woods to help you get a better idea of what looks can be achieved with alternatives.
