Palm Island four poster bed painted in black for an updated, modern look

Modern vs. Traditional Furniture: Knowing Which Style is Right for You

March 11, 2023

Contemporary and modern furniture is known for its sleek and simple design; characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and minimal embellishments. Other than personal preference, the only real determination in whether or not you have modern or traditional pieces is your home’s design scheme.

In New England, we see a lot of traditional pieces in the homes we visit and get a lot of requests for more ornate heirloom pieces.  We’ve also been in homes as far south as West Palm Beach, Florida to install modern, high-gloss pieces complimenting the area’s bright, airy coastal homes.

Sometimes, we can even find a way to blend traditional and modern pieces together to create the piece of your dreams. For example, campaign furniture is traditionally made of Mahogany wood and brass hardware, but when a client asked for a set of campaign furniture finished in blue paint with nickel hardware, we obliged. This piece has been one of our favorite Scott James Furniture projects since the day it was finished. Similarly, the Palm Island four-poster bed above was painted in black for a modern look.

In other instances, we’ve built traditional 1800’s styled night stands in tiger maple or cherry but have hidden modern-day charging ports in the back of the case to accommodate today’s modern needs.

Modern furniture’s sleek design and versatility can add a touch of elegance and style to your space. When Scott James Furniture & Design builds your custom modern furniture for you, you can bet the construction and joinery will far outlast its time.

Contact our office for your next project, whether it be modern, traditional, or a unique blend of both.
