Grommets have long been used in tabletop and desktop surfaces for multiple reasons. Whether you want to keep your cables safe by running them through a protected hole or if you simply want to corral your wires and keep them from snaking across your desktop or tabletop, a well-placed grommet can bundle your wires into one area and keep them away from your furniture’s edges.
When designing your piece and considering using grommets, think about what you really need it for. Is it for a single cord or multiple wires that when bundled, may require a larger than normal grommet cutout? Should there be multiple grommets to accommodate multiple devices? Should the placement of the grommet be centered on the furniture of off-center to better accommodate the devices that the piece will be used for?
You may be accustomed to seeing plastic or rubber grommets in most desktops but Scott James Furniture & Design can find a grommet that is not only functional but perfectly suited to the look of your piece. Below is a photo of a rosewood desk that has both a matching wooden grommet and an elegant brass grommet selected for the final piece, a great option for our client who was still undecided on which look they wanted most.
Not quite sure if a grommet is a solution for organizing your cables? Ask about the possibility of adding a recessed power outlet and charging station to your piece (like this nightstand) to keep wires contained.
