When we get a request for a traditional piece, we know exactly what it means. Traditional furniture is handcrafted, the joinery is authentic dovetail and mortis and tenon, and the finish is shellacked and hand-rubbed.
Some of our most favorite traditional pieces include the Bonnet Top Secretary, a D.R. Dimes design replicated from an antique. This piece had four, small hidden components built into it, which was a popular feature in high-end furniture in early-American furniture days. The idea was to protect home-owners’ valuable coins, jewelry, and paperwork against would-be intruders. If they couldn’t find it, they couldn’t steal it. This piece was made in Cherry.
The Side by Side Dresser in Tiger Maple (pictured top left) features brass Chip and Dale hardware by Horton Brasses and a hand-carved fan in the center top drawer. Even the runners on this piece are handmade wooden runners that have been waxed so the drawers fully function. The case features through dovetails, adding detail to the top of the piece.
This Tiger Maple Dressing Table (pictured bottom left) also features hidden compartments. There is a false back in each drawer to create a secondary space for small treasures. This piece also has handmade wooden runners to allow the drawers to function. Dressing tables, sometimes called toilet tables, were just small tables with two or three drawers that were popular in the 17th century.
